Renewable Energy Sources - Wind Power

Wind power can be one of the simplest renewable energy solutions to implement, with a variety of applications such as pumping water, ventilation or generating electricity with the use of a simple wind turbine. Blades turned by the wind, rotating a copper coil inside a magnetic field, which in turn creates an electrical current

The amount of power produced depends mainly on the annual average wind speed on the site and the area swept by the blades, the larger the blades, the more power is generated. The rotor is mounted on a central shaft with a yaw device, which allows the blades to turn to the appropriate angle to catch the wind. These wind turbines vary in size greatly, from smaller domestic applications which may be standalone or smaller building-mounted devices with rotors as small as 1m diameter rated at 1kW, to large scale commercial wind farms with blades up to 70m diameter rated at several MW’s.

Power generated may be used in a variety of household applications, such as running domestic appliances, water and space heating and may be stored in a battery for use during periods of little to no wind. Wind provides a clean source of power and, after initial installation, turbines are virtually cost free
