The translation of the traditional rural barn to that of a contemporary dwelling creates a modern interpretation of this traditional form. This Eco friendly dwelling responds to its site and orientation with glazed walls to the southern side of the dwelling. Heating is by way of wood burning stoves with these being the main heat source in winter for the dwellings. Roof mounted Solar panels provide hot water and photovoltaic cells provide electricity for this house which has the capacity to be carbon neutral.

The use of timber from managed forests makes timber a ‘green’ and suitable material for modern house design. Timber frame also has the advantage that the design may be modified to create a dwelling that is extremely energy efficient and will reach the standards of the ‘passive-house’ using technologies which are now commonplace. Timber frame is also relatively economical with off-site construction one solution to super-insulated, energy efficient dwellings.
   
Passive House  

This certified passive house design has been designed to achieve the German PassivHaus Institute Standards. The elevations have all habitable rooms to the south side and the rural site allowed the building to be orientated exactly due south. The balcony feature acts as a balcony for the first floor bedroom and also provides shading, reducing sunlight in the summertime and the opportunity for overheating to occur.
