- NI’s First ‘Passive House Designer’ to Help Save £££ and the Environment at Eco Show Live
- NI lags behind in race for environmental living
“Individuals and housing developers in Northern Ireland are missing out on a number of government grants which could help them save both environmentally and financially,” according to a local architect who has been officially certified as NI’s first and only ‘Passive House Designer’.
Portadown-based Paul McAllister Architects which was recently awarded the ‘Best Green Business’ accolade at the Craigavon Business Awards 2010, believes the market for low energy housing is largely untapped and that NI is dragging behind its EU counterparts when it comes to sustainable living.
The company will be alerting the public to the many benefits that can be achieved by investing in sustainable, low carbon design practice at the 2010 Eco Show Live, Europe’s first truly interactive environmentally focused show (King’s Hall, Belfast , 8-10 October).
“The general public is definitely buying into the environmental living concept,” said MD, Paul McAlister. “Around 10% of those building new houses want to achieve a ‘low energy’ lifestyle, yet they are totally unaware of how to do so – which is where we come in. However the vast majority don’t even consider it an option and we really want to do what we can to challenge perceptions and encourage a more open-minded approach.”
While the initial investment in a low energy house adds around 10% to the building costs, the payback is an 80% reduction in annual energy costs, representing substantial long term financial and environmental savings.
“Generally any additional expenditure at construction stage can be recouped and paid off over 10 years thanks to huge reductions in energy spend. Government grants are also available, such as those from Land & Property Services which offers full rate relief for five years to the first occupier of a new zero carbon home, making the sustainable or carbon-zero housing option totally feasible. “
Paul and his team of experts will be spreading this message at Eco Show Live in October. Having exhibited at the Self Build Show for several years, the event organiser, Clive Corry believes it presents a great opportunity to McAlister Architects:
“While the property market has suffered dramatically during the recession, development hasn’t stopped completely and going forward, those building new homes or commercial premises are looking for every opportunity to help them save and gain in the long term. Eco Show Live presents a very unique opportunity to investigate options and open doors to a more sustainable way of living for many people.”
