Cultra, Co. Down
This dwelling is located on an elevated site with tremendous views of Belfast Lough and beyond. The site is sloping with mature trees to all sides. Our clients’ aspirations was that the new dwelling should be a period house and look as if it had been 'on the site for at least 100 years'.
The timeless look of this classically inspired home evokes an air of solidity and formal grandeur. Within the building, the space is light and open with a complexity of plan which incorporates all modern conveniences. High ceilings, classical detailing and a formal staircase add to the impression that the house is from a bygone era.
The house is almost completely screened from view of the main road by existing trees and hedging, orientated on an East-West axis. The mature hedgerows and trees form a natural backdrop to the dwelling ensuring that the building merges into the surrounding landscape.
The success of the home is due to the attention to detail in terms of the classical proportions of the design and also the detailing of individual elements. The design of windows and doors to complement the period details is essential to allow the home to be authentic in its period detailing. The period detailing is carried throughout the exterior and interior of the house creating a relaxed formal classicism in accordance with the original design intentions.
