Envelope or Mechanical? Getting the Balance Right in High Performance Buildings: Lois Arena, Steven Winter Associates, Norwalk, Connecticut.

Lois Arena is one of the best-known high-performance building services engineers in the US and has worked on several flagship projects including the Cornell Tech project in Manhattan, probably the most efficient residential tower in NYC. Prepare to be highly engaged by Lois’ no-nonsense presentation style as she outlines the challenges facing building services designers in delivering high performance buildings. A shift is taking place away from highly complex mechanical systems towards simpler models which optimise comfort and superior indoor air quality. Lois has faced that challenge and come out the far side. Share the journey she has undertaken and be inspired with the new paradigm whereby the envelope is front-and-centre of any mechanical services strategy.

Sustainable Cities - A Path To Curbing Climate Change: Richard Yancey, Executive Director, Building Energy Exchange, NYC.

70% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas and cities by 2050 according to the UN. Furthermore, in excess of 80% of today’s building stock will still exist in 2050. If we are to dramatically reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, our focus has to be toward creating highly sustainable towns and cities. A leading city that is facing up to this challenge is New York, which has set a target of reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. We are thrilled to be joined by Richard Yancey, Executive Director of the New York Building Energy Exchange (BE-EX) who will provide an overview of the measures which NYC is implementing to meet these challenging goals. Many of these are directly transferable to towns and cities all over the world, including the ‘Retrofit Accelerator’, ‘Buildings of Excellence’ competition and ‘Emissions Caps’ on large buildings. It’s high-time to make serious moves on bending the emissions curve, and Richard promises to provide inspiration for the journey.

Golden Opportunity - Ireland Set to Play Global Leadership Role in Climate Action: Scott Foster, Director of Sustainable Energy Division, United Nations, Geneva.
